Collage and ink drawing on cartridge paper.

Love Note Cards

I've been creating small hand painted, drawn and freehand cut 210 gsm folded cards and envelopes for a Top Hat post box I'm making.

This example is called 'Silver Soul Fly' and it was created with Indian ink, black fineliner and silver opaque ink. The cards are handmade from recycled cotton rag and 5.7 x 6.2 cm when folded.

Each card has a different image and the concept is for the cards to be received from one side of the hat post box, after a person has posted their message or wish into the opposite side.

People can draw or collect a card design at random, and choose to either keep their card in a pocket or purse for luck, or they can give it away to a friend.

You can see another card design here:

The Night Walker

This is a short story I wrote last winter, called 'The Night Walker'...

Wandering through the streets at night,
The Nightwalker's eyes adjust to the bright moon light.
Trees cast shadows which look like claws,
Scratching and crawling on old wooden doors.

I illustrated the story inside an old 1940's cigarette box with black fineliner. I also created a miniature background set and base to display it on. This was constructed from thick mount board card on which I first sketched out a lose design in pencil, cut out the shapes with scissors and a craft knife, and then I painted all the surfaces with 3 coats of opaque black Indian ink.

Here are a few photos of the drawing process, completed set and illustrated box:

'Bed Of Nails' collage

This is a mixed media collage I created for a booklet centrefold image over the weekend. It's called 'Bed Of Nails' and it's suggestive of the traumatic experiences soldiers encountered in the trenches during World War One.

The Carnivorous Cake

Happy Friday, Happy Birthday!
Here's a Carnivorous Cake illustration, and poem:

The Carnivorous Cake,
Was a cackling clump,
Who laughed at the site,
Of a ubiquitous thumb,
That was attached to a hand,
On the end of an arm,
Which reached out to grab,
The plate he lay on.

Both illustration and poem © Nikki Pinder 2011

Drawn with Indian ink and dipping pen on heavy weight cartridge paper.

New Digital Print

I've added a new digital artwork print to my Etsy Nightowl shop of my 'Private Universe' illustration. You can find it via this link:

Dream Sculpture

Last Sunday I went to see the 'Dream' sculpture in St Helens, Merseyside.

I thought it was pretty cool as it kind of looked like a giant was sitting in the trees as you approached it...

...and I really liked how it had an optical illusion effect in the way it appeared slightly warped...

It also reminded me of the giant head people in the beginning of the film 'The NeverEnding Story'.

I was impressed and it was inspiring to see, but I was quite disappointed that there was a huge tall fence all around it with a man in a white van and guard dog so you couldn't walk right up to it and photograph it up close...

I guess that's to look after it until a more attractive form of protection is put in place, as there was unfortunately some graffiti on the back of it's neck and some big chunks chipped out of it. If they feel a permanent fence is necessary I think it'd look cool if a decorative Elizabethan styled neck collar (fence) was created to place around it...

Then it would at least look like part of the sculpture and not make you feel as if you shouldn't be there. Also, it might look quite surreal as if it's a giant head with the earth as it's body. Something like these perhaps:

I would like to see it again though, in Summer when the light is really good for photographing it, and hopefully when there's no fence around it anymore. Here's some info about the Dream: Dream (sculpture)

I've found a few photos of it online I think are great, especially the one with the snow which for some reason also reminds me of a Beatles album cover:

New Nightowl shop

Here's my new Nightowl shop: http://nightowlsecrets.bigcartel.com which I've created so I can sell my hand-painted t-shirts and other large items. I'll be continuing to use my Etsy shop to sell handmade badges and gifts which you can find here: http://www.nightowlsecrets.co.uk

The Croquet Gazette

At the end of April I created a crazy cheesy spaghetti and meatball croquet themed illustration which has been selected for inclusion into the June edition of the Croquet Gazette. The Croquet Gazette is the official printed magazine for UK croquet and is read by Croquet enthusiasts throughout the country.
